Computer tips, tricks & techniques

For the next two items (Memory and Processor),
you will want to find out what you have in your system.

Simply right click on "My Computer" and select properties to see your systems specs.

If you have under 1 gigabyte of RAM, you should get more.
If you have 2 gigs, you should be fine.
If purchasing a new system, there is no reason to get anything less than 2 gigs.

This will also tell you what type of processor you have.

MEMORY?:

Is your computer slow?
Most computers come with just enough memory. Not the hard drive, "RAM" Random access memory. It's kind of like the size of your desk so you have enough room to open a file, pull things out and look at it all without having things overlap or fall on the floor ("crash"). Get it?

You can dramatically speed up your system with more memory and it is easy to physically install. To find out how much you have and how much you CAN have, go to:
www.crucial.com  and run their "Scan my system" They are to be trusted and provide all the information you could want and more than you may even understand regarding your system and how it works. Then you can buy more and their prices are fair.

If you have 256 to 512 megabytes of RAM, get more. If you have 1000 or 1 Gigabyte, you should be OK. 2 Gigs makes it fly! Newer computers now commonly have 2 to 4 or even more gigabytes pre-installed. Vista should have 4 but will run fine on 2.

If your computer has very little RAM and you take this advice, when you do and the thing reacts oh-so much faster than you imagined, I mean a REAL difference, you too will say: "Wow, that's cool!"

Processor?:

Now we are getting into the meat of your system. Most new computers have a much slower processor and now you can get the Duel or quad Core processors but there are MANY. So how do you tell what the heck you have or are looking to buy?
Goto: www.cpubenchmark.net
There you will find a few pages that will help you understand where the particular processor ranks among the many.

(Example: Intel core Duo 2 E8400)
Hears what you do: Click on the CPU List page,
then open a FIND window by holding down "CTRL" and "F"
this will launch a window that will help you find anything you type in on that page. Type in E8400 (for example) and then clicked on the name as it found it.
This brings you to a list page that will separate it from the others and show where it ranks in benchmark testing.

I have found that anything in the 1000+ range is very fast.
I read that if you try to get one of the top end processors such as something rated over 4 to 5000, it is just a waste of money.
You can only push a car so fast with a jet engine. It just costs more.

This resource took me quite some time to find. Once I did, it has helped me at work and many of my clients. To be able to see how any given processor ranks among the many made me say: "Wow, that's cool!"

Cool computer tips and tricks:

Page size is a snap!

Simply holding down the CTRL button + rolling the mouse ball back and forth, I can very quickly adjust the screen size.
As you sit in front of a screen with the ability to manipulate a the likes of a super computer, You would then want to gain proper perspective so as to see what the were viewing in the screen.

If you work with Microsoft Word, and you have ever tried to click and drag to select text in Word while the default is set to display about 3/4 of the page at best and you end up running down many pages before it stops selecting. If you have never know you can do that and the need is there, you too will say, "Wow, that's cool!"

Live Tech Support:

At some point, I will offer live web meeting services to help anyone in need of setting up, resolving or just cleaning up any issues they might have for a fraction of the cost of a computer technician. All we do is set up a web based meeting where I can assist you from a remote location. We'll look at what you have, teach you how to maintain a healthy system and advise you on any changes that should be made.
